Before the 2011–2012 school year the decision was made to hold part of the freshman classes at the then nearby middle school feeder, Mercer Middle School. The enrollment at Freedom had risen to over 2,000 students (note: the building capacity is 1,600). Because of the new middle school opening of J. Michael Lunsford this was possible.
