The Western Branch of the National Home for Disabled Soldiers was established in 1885 in Leavenworth, Kansas to house aging veterans of the American Civil War.The 214-acre (87 ha) campus (formerly 640 acres (260 ha)) is near Fort Leavenworth, and is directly adjacent to Leavenworth National Cemetery, south of Leavenworth town.
In 1924 a scandal arose over mistreatment of the soldiers at the home. The oldest veteran of the Civil War, Lorenzo Grace, died there in 1928. The last veteran to share the home was Henry Taylor Dowling whose entry was recorded on April 17, 1941. The Home housed widows of Confederate veterans beginning in the 1940s before closing in 1963.
Both Homes are model retirement centers, where residents can maintain an independent lifestyle in an environment designed for safety, comfort and personal enrichment. Military veterans from all service branches can live at either Home. A few less than 900 men and women, with an average age in the eighties, currently reside at the homes.
