He was one of seven children of Nicholas and Marguerita Venetucci, immigrants from Italy. His father worked as a coal miner, with the family slowly saving enough money to purchase a small farm in 1936.

Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom is an independent live music venue in Denver, Colorado, with two rooms (Cervantes’ Ballroom and Cervantes’ Other Side) that offer live music and events simultaneously. It is located in Denvers' historic Five Points neighborhood. It was originally a live jazz venue by Benny Hooper called the Ex-Servicemen's Club.
The Vortex Club was founded by ex-taxi driver David Mossman. Mossman later started the Margate Jazz Festival before he died in 2018. In 2007, the club set up a record label, Vortex Records, to release the debut album by London-based trio Portico Quartet.
