A 20¢ Newfoundland stamp of 1928. The colony and later the dominion of Newfoundland had a 90-year history of issuing postage stamps. The first issues were in 1857. The last issue was in 1947, two years before Newfoundland joined the confederation. Newfoundland stamps remain valid for mail posted anywhere in Canada.
The stamps are engraved and printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited, Ottawa. This was quickly followed by a series in 1954 featuring the Queen's Wilding portrait. 12, 9½ x imperf. 12, 9½ x imperf. 12, 9½ x imperf. The next series of Canadian definitives starting in 1962 again featured the Queen.
Since at least the early 1980s, the price of a stamp has closely followed the consumer price index. The large jumps in the early 1900s are because a change by a single penny was significant compared to the cost of the stamp. For example, the price increase from $0.02 to $0.03 on July 6, 1932, was a 50% increase in cost.
Canada Post announces the phase-out of door-to-door mail delivery in urban centres, and announces an increase in the price of a stamp from $0.63 to $1 ($0.85 in bulk). Sales of the Permanent Stamp were suspended until after the March 2014 rate increase.
The tulip stamps were featured on collector plates (Canada Post item numbers 250437 and 250438) in 2004 and sold for $29.95 each. The Orchids of Canada stamps were used for a 2004 clock (Canada Post item number 314667) and sold at $19.95 each.
