Hospice is a Medicare entitlement program, covered at no cost by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurers, including the cost of medicines, equipment, supplies, and transportation.

When should you consider in-home hospice?

If a physician certifies a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less, you can benefit from hospice care. There is no need to wait until the last minute. Hospice should not be considered the “end”; it should be considered the beginning of a peaceful passing.

People who put off hospice care could spend months in and out of the hospital with their loved ones struggling to care for them. In-home hospice care offers the comfort and safety of a familiar place with familiar people. In fact, many patients say they are more interested in the quality, rather than the quantity, of their remaining life.

Do you qualify for the Medicare hospice benefit?

Medicare* pays for hospice care under these conditions:

  • The patient has Medicare Part A.
  • A physician has certified a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less.
  • The patient elects hospice benefits instead of standard Medicare benefits for the illness.
  • A Medicare-participating hospice program, such as Calvary Hospice, provides care.
  • The patient may revoke the hospice benefit at any time.
  • If the patient chooses to revoke hospice status, Medicare coverage or other coverage is then reinstated.
