What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federally funded health insurance program. It is a program for individuals 65 and older and individuals under the age of 65 that have certain disabilities, such as permanent kidney failure.

Whether you're looking for Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, or a Prescription Drug Plan, BlueSky Insurance can help you find what you need. Additional background information about other parts of Medicare can be found below.

Hospital Insurance - Medicare Part A

Hospital insurance covers inpatient hospital care, critical access care, short-term care in skilled nursing facilities, hospice and home health care. Medicare typically does not pay for assisted living facilities, nursing homes or long-term care at home. Typically there is no monthly premium for most Medicare beneficiaries if the beneficiary or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while they were working. If an individual is not eligible to receive Hospital Insurance at no cost then the individual may be eligible to purchase Part A coverage.

Medical Insurance - Medicare Part B

Medical Insurance covers visits to the doctor, outpatient care, some preventative services, as well as some occupational and physical therapy. The monthly premium is often based on beneficiary income. It is important to remember that Medical Insurance does not cover 100 percent of services and beneficiaries will be responsible for the balance of expenses not paid for by Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plans - Medicare Part C

Medicare Advantage Plans cover the same services as Medicare Part A and Part B combined, and may offer prescription drug coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private insurance companies, which means you can choose your preferred plan whether it is a preferred provider organization, health maintenance organization, or Private Fee-for-Service.

Prescription Drug Coverage - Medicare Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage is offered through insurance companies that contract with Medicare. You can receive Part D drug coverage in one of two ways — through a stand alone prescription drug plan that you can use alongside Original Medicare or via a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.

Medicare Supplemental Insurance - Medigap

Medigap plans are sold by insurance companies to help pay for certain out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare. This may include coinsurance, co-payments, deductibles.
