Wilton Community Day

The third Annual Wilton Community Day, Parkfest ’09, is getting off with a bang this year as the organizers have planned a full array of entertainment, attractions and activities for the entire family.

Scheduled on Saturday, July 11 from noon to 8 pm at Gavin Park, this rain-or-shine event is sponsored by the Town of Wilton and local businesses.

Admission is free, and includes concerts featuring the multi-genre soul music of Soul Session; the Tequila Mockingbirds, voted the Capital Region’s “Best Acoustic Duo” in the Metroland Magazine 2007 and 2008 Readers’ Poll; the guitar-driven classic rock and roll of E’Town Express; and the delightful 4-part a cappela harmonies of the all-female Saratoga Soundtrack Chorus.

Wilton Community Day also offers plenty of excitement for sports and automobile aficionados. Before greetings by ParkFest organizers and the Town Supervisor, the crowd can watch the third annual Wilton Cup Championship soccer tournament, with trophies given to the winning team. There will also be classic cars on display, with “Best in Show” awards presented to the hottest wheels.

Vital town, local and regional services will be exhibiting, including the Town Supervisor, Wilton Wildlife Park, Safe Child N.Y., N.Y. State Troopers, Rotary, Kiwanis, the local Fire Departments and many more. There will also be an inspiring and colorful flag display.

Kids are invited to put on their sneakers and dash off in the “1K Fun Run.” There will also be a 5K Run for ages 14 and up. The first 100 runners will receive a t-shirt for participating, and the top 10 finishers in each category will receive prizes. Donations will benefit the Wilton Rotary Club.

Other fun activities include free pony rides, climbing wall, magic, racing pig and “hot dog” daschunds races, free face painting, caricature artist, wood sculptor demonstrations, apple pie baking contest and Ben ‘n Jerry’s ice cream eating contests, along with the captivating critters of the Ashville Zoo. There are also amusement rides galore – including The Round-Up, The Octopus and The Space Chaser all for $1.00 a ride or $6.00 ride pass from 11am-3pm.

Dozens of craftspeople will display their wares, including jewelry, clothing, note cards, magnets, and lotions, potions and perfumes. And everyone should bring their appetites because food will be served all day long – ranging from chicken, pizza and sausage to burgers, dogs and fried dough – with sweet treats like Cotton Candy, Sno Cones and Candy Apples for dessert.

The festivities culminate at dusk, with a spectacular fireworks display to end the fun-filled day with a bang.
