The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts houses a permanent collection of more than twenty thousand works of art from almost every major world culture. Especially noteworthy are the museum’s collections of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Modern and Contemporary American art. The museum is known for its Faberge egg collection, as well as featuring work by Degas, Hopper, Picasso, Kirchner and more. The museum also holds South Asian, Himalayan, and African art.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is currently undergoing a major renovation and expansion. All galleries are off view until the grand opening on May 1, 2010. The VMFA Shop and the Arts Café are also closed. The popular 3rd Thursdays events continue to run, as well as other special events.
