An American orchestra, based in Cleveland, Ohio. Russia-American conducter and violinist Nikolai Sokoloff was hired to be the founding conducter back in 1918, after being popularized for being the musical director of the San Francisco People's Philharmonic Orchestra.
Although they began by performing in smaller venues such as Grays Armory in downtown Cleveland, the orchestra's home base concert hall is the Severance Hall, which first opened in 1931.
