Women Leading Kentucky announced today that it will sponsor a board training seminar Nov. 18 to train new and existing members of nonprofit boards in Kentucky on best practices.
The training is intended to ensure that community volunteers and staff are equipped with all the tools they need to be responsible, effective board members, according to Janet Holloway, executive director of Women Leading Kentucky.
The training will be held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Central Baptist Education Center at 1720 Nicholasville Road in Lexington. It is open to men and women who are executive directors, board members and staff of nonprofit agencies as well as those who wish to serve in those roles in the future.
“With the current economic challenges, nonprofits are more important than ever,” said Janet Holloway executive director of Women Leading Kentucky. “At the same time, the level of scrutiny of those organizations is at an all-time high, which is appropriate because we all must be good stewards of this public trust.”
The speakers will be Linda Breathitt, who is a presidential appointee to the Southern States Energy board and former member of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and Danielle Clore, the executive director of the University of Kentucky’s Nonprofit Leadership Initiative.
Breathitt, who is an energy consultant, will talk about the importance of joining community boards. She also has served on the Kentucky Public Service Commission, the Kentucky Commission on Women and LexArts,
Clore will educate participants about the roles and responsibilities of board members as well as best practices.
The training will conclude with a panel discussion among members of prominent boards in the community about challenges and lessons learned. Panel members will be:
· Lyle Hanna, president of Hanna Resource Group, who has served in leadership roles for the National Society for Human Resource Management Foundation, Habitat for Humanity International Board, Habitat Global Leadership Council and United Way of the Bluegrass;
· Jack Kelly, CEO of WealthBridge Connect, who formerly has served as CEO of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, two U.S. Olympic Festivals and Turner Broadcasting’s Goodwill Games; and
· Paula Hanson, partner at Dean Dorton Ford as well as a member of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Women Leading Kentucky Advisory Council and former Chair of Commerce Lexington.
The cost is $75 and includes registration, materials and a certificate of completion. Kentucky-licensed CPAs can receive continuing professional education credits for participating in the training. Registration can be completed at www.womenleadingky.com, and attendance is limited to 75 participants.
