October 1-November 14, Front Gallery
Artist Reception: October 10, 5-7 pm.
Eva Marie Restel will be exhibiting ceramic pieces in our Front Gallery. From her Artist Statement:
My hand-built ceramic pieces deal mostly with a bird-like shape symbolizing the flight of living. I am fascinated by the idea of people actively taking part in life instead of blundering through and letting life just happen. The carvings depict a certain moment in time, an emotion, a place, a story or a famous piece of artwork that has enhanced the vitality of my living. Each piece has its own story. Each story has affected my life in one way or another.
The Perpetual Motion piece that has the cello, piano and music notes on it comes from a moment when my son and I were learning how to play Perpetual Motion in D Major on the cello. His teacher is an 84 year old nun and was showing techniques to make your bow go really fast. At the end, she broke out into the fastest rendition of anything I have ever seen, then wheeled around and ended her impromptu recital with a ditty on the piano. We stood open mouthed at the pure talent and vitality of this most wonderful 84 year old nun. The notes on the piece are the actual notes of the Perpetual Motion in D Major and they spill out just like they seemed to do in that magical moment we witnessed. May I be wise enough to live life that vibrantly right now, much less at 84.
