Penn's Peak is proud to announce the two-day return of Bob Weir and RatDog with special guest Jackie Greene on Tuesday, July 14th and Wednesday, July 15th, 2009.
RatDog
RatDog was started with Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead and the distinguished bassist Rob Wasserman. As their music evolved, more players were added to the mix. The new members included Jay Lane on drums - one of the Bay Area's Best, Jeff Chimenti, Jazz/Blues/Rock pianist, Mark Karan on guitar and saxophonist Kenny Brooks. They played their first full show as a band on April 22, 1995. They were originally billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as RatDog Revue, but they played their first official show as RatDog on August 8, 1995. Unfortunately in 2003, Wasserman decided to concentrate on more personal projects, even though he continues his duo relationship with Weir, RatDog was in need of a new bassist. They did not have to go far to find the perfect replacement. They bought on Bay Area's own Robin Sylvester. Robin is best known for his long-time association with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame saxophonist Steve Douglas. RatDog's music represents Weir's complete repertoire from blues to the psychedelic stylings of his Grateful Dead classics to some of his solo material. In 2000 they released their first studio album, Evening Moods, and in 2001 they released Live at Roseland - a double CD collection from a Portland, Oregon show. This album is a huge favorite among Dead Heads.
Jackie Greene
Jackie Greene, for being only 27 years old, has made his way around the music circuit. He has performed with the likes of Buddy Guy, Elvis Costello, Susan Tedeschi and B.B. King to name a few, and he has performed everywhere. The Newport Folk Festival, The Monterey Jazz Festival and even Bonnaroo have all had Jackie on their stages. He is also an all around kinda guy; singer, songwriter, guitarist, keyboard player, acoustic solo artist and electrifying band leader. His most recent release, Giving Up The Ghost, is his fifth album, but his first release on 429 Records. Many people like to refer to him as the latest "New Dylan," but Jackie is not up for that, hence the title of his new album. "The phrase (Giving Up The Ghost) refers to the destruction of certain notions and practices that I used to hold in high esteem. I'm just sorta sick of being the kid with the harmonica rack. I don't want to be Bob Dylan," he says. Jackie played for some time with Phil Lesh and Friends and Phil described his playing as "impeccable." Jackie is in the midst of a serious tour and enjoying every minute of it!
