Exhibition at the Irving Arts Center showcases a 3,000-piece, 9-foot-tall model of the Ten Thousand Springs Pavilion, part of the Imperial Garden in the Forbidden City palace complex in Beijing. The hand-crafted structure made of red sandalwood is on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and was assembled by Smithsonian senior conservator Don Williams and his crew without any nails. The show, which opens with a Family Funday event on Sunday, July 12, will also feature photographs and text panels in English and Chinese. The exhibit will be on display in the Carpenter Lobby through June 30, 2010.
The free Family Fun Day, on Sunday, July 12, from 2 to 5 p.m., includes performances, tai chi and calligraphy demonstrations, lantern-making and complimentary refreshments.
