Kentucky State University Concert Choir

Thursday, January 21, 2010 – 7:00 p.m.

HCTC First Federal Center,

One Community College Drive

Hazard, KY

Admission: $10 (age 5 & under free)

Kentucky State University, a new partner in the University Center of the Mountains, is bringing their Concert Choir to Hazard for a performance and outreach opportunity that will involve area schools in a choral performance. Area high school / junior high school chorus programs will have the opportunity to work on music selections during the fall semester to rehearse and perform with the KYSU Concert Choir in a public evening performance. The KYSU Concert Choir will present additional choral selections, along with songs from their high energy show choir performances, to provide a full spectrum of this award winning music performance program. Under the direction of Dr. Carl Smith, Professor of Music Emeritus, the Kentucky State University Concert Choir is one of the foremost ambassadors for the University. Composed of undergraduates from all academic areas of the university, the choir is a well-rounded, diverse organization that upholds the highest standards in performance as well as academics. The KYSU Concert Choir tours annually throughout the United States and has performed with several major orchestras. Frequently the choir appears at music workshops, seminars and professional conventions including the Southern and National Divisions of the American Choral Directors Associations, and the Music Educators National Convention. The choir also participates in several choral competitions and most recently received the top rating in the HBCU competition Extravaganza in Black held in Las Vegas, Nevada. They are also past winners of the Annual Spiritual Competition held in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition to a rehearsal, Dr. Carl Smith will also conduct a choral workshop with area school choirs during the day of the public performance to provide music students in this region a full choral festival experience. See the Arts Education Schedule for more information.
