Jazz singer, Janet Planet, released a collection of songs that commemorates the sites, cities and commerce across the United States. Her concept album, "Of Thee I Sing" celebrates the industrious spirit and natural beauty that made our country great.
The inspiration for this collection came amidst the energy and excitement of the 2008 presidential campaign. Janet dedicates her effort to honest, hard-working Americans - "be they in the White House or the house next door" - in hopes the music and lyric serve as a source of pride and inspiration. "Whenever our country has faced challenge or adversity, music has always been the great communicator," says Ms. Planet. "This is an important time in our nation's history. My hope is to take listeners to a place where they remember the goodness in people, our commitment to community, the beauty of our land, and a love for the place we call home."
Collectively, these songs take the listener on a cross-country journey - from the villages of Cape Cod to the canyons of Wyoming; New York to New Orleans; from copper mines in Arizona to the streets of San Francisco. It's an American story in quintessential American form. "These are songs about places and people... songs about coming home and falling in love...songs about change," Ms. Planet explains.
Born, raised and based in Wisconsin, Janet Planet has been a working musician from the Midwest for more than 25 years. Self-produced and managed for the majority of her career, Ms. Planet is a productive recording artist, performer, teacher and clinician. She has over 20 recordings in her discography to date. Her concert schedule takes her to performance halls, universities, jazz festivals and clubs across the USA and internationally.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts and generously sponosred by Special Properties.
