Planned as an entertainment district in downtown Cleveland, PlayhouseSquare comprised 5 theaters by 1922. By 1969 all of the theaters had closed and were later slated for demolition. Through a combination of funding from government, local and private foundations, individuals, and corporations, the theaters were spectacularly renovated.
