Though it is not exactly known where she got her nickname, it is generally accepted that she came to be referred that as to all the "calamity" that seems to always be around her. She lived hard and was known to be quite ornery at times. Jane even "wrote" her own "autobiography" late in her life, and also signed up to give "one woman" stage shows.
