Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." -- Martin Luther King, Jr. "Letter from Birmingham Jail
International Justice Mission (IJM) is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of some of the most horrific forms of oppression that exist in our world today, including bonded slavery and forced prostitution. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials around the globe to ensure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators and to promote functioning public justice systems.
All proceeds from the show will be donated to IJM. To learn more and get involved, check out www.ijm.org
Jon Black 9:00 PM
"At first, I remember people just kind of looking around, confused. You could see people prairie-dogging (heads popping up over the tops of their cubicles) all wondering what they should do," says Black, "Pretty soon, were all walking down these steps, exiting the building. We were to line up in this big open space according to our department, and ours was in the back. As I walked by all the other departments, I just remember thinking about how miserable everyone looked, how they all seemed to have this look of resignation like this was it for the rest of their lives. The whole thing was very surreal, like an out-of-body experience. I knew that day I had to get out."
For the next eight months, Jon planned his escape from corporate America, and in the spring of 2004, Jon officially left his cubicle to pursue a career in music. "I knew when I walked out the door I was taking a chance. I was writing my own story, regardless of what ended up happening." Jon entered the studio and emerged with The Rhythm of the Rising Sun, a collection of brash, emotionally-charged indie-pop songs concerned with wanting more out of life a direct result of his experiences working in the corporate world. "The question that kept coming back to me was, What if people quit doing what they were supposed to do and started doing what they were called to do?"
Matthew Mayfield 9:00 PM
Moses Mayfield frontman Matthew Mayfield has been inside. Signed by
Epic Records in 2005, Mayfield has seen how the music business often
trades industry commerce over real craft. When Columbia Records took
over in 2006, even the release of their much-anticipated full-length
album, aptly named, "The Inside" couldn't stop them from becoming a
business casualty of the label. Now, after six years of national
touring and heavy lessons-learned, Matthew offers his most honest,
dedicated songs yet in solo performance. "My heart is in it," the
songwriter says. "I know this is true because I hesitate to sing them
full go." Matthew Mayfield is finally outside again: you can hear it
in his voice.
The Blue Cut Robbery 9:00 PM
The Blue Cut Robbery was born in the desperate and recent fall of 2008. Birmingham-based songwriters, Matthew Mayfield and Stewart Vann, joined forces with drummer Wil Drake to complete a genuinely unique iteration of the concept: "Power Trio".
Mayfield, as the guitarist and principal composer of the group, uses the song crafting skills he developed as the frontman for Moses Mayfield to bring a completely new sound to the stage. Drake, an accomplished rock drummer, makes the jump with Mayfield from 'Moses' to the Blue Cut Robbery. While Vann, hailing from his indie/pop band The Triceratops, brings a strong foundation to the band on the bass guitar. The Blue Cut Robbery creates energy as they bounce off of each other; cascading through the band's complex hard-hitting rock songs. The depth and intricacy of the bands talent provide the trio the ability to produce an enormous sound for a three piece. They do nothing but have fun on stage, and the fun is infectious. They are able to brighten a room with the energy in their arrangements.
