Lobo fans are filling University Stadium in record numbers. In fact, nine of the top-10 crowds in the history of the stadium have occurred since 2001 and season tickets have more than tripled over the past 14 years.
New Mexico has set school attendance records four times in the past six years and in 2005 UNM averaged 99% capacity at University Stadium - one of the best ratios in the country. From 2001-05, UNM had an average attendance over 30,000, a first for the program.
The Lobos' home field has become a very intimidating place for visitors. UNM has won 16 of its past 28 home games overall, 12 of its last 21 against Mountain West competition and 13 of its last 19 against non-conference foes. New Mexico is 21-14 in its last 35 home games overall and 25-16 since the middle of the 2000 season.
University Stadium was expanded prior to the start of the 2001 season. Capacity increased to 37,370 as 5,700 seats were added at the north end. The east and west stands were connected by a pavilion and LoboVision, a state-of-the-art videoboard and scoreboard, was added. The city of Albuquerque provided UNM with bleachers that were installed at the south end of the stadium, further increasing capacity to 38,634.
University Stadium opened its gates Sept. 17, 1960, when UNM hosted the National University of Mexico. The Lobos thumped their foreign visitors, 77-6, UNM's biggest margin of victory at University Stadium.
Prior to 1960, UNM played its home games at Zimmerman Field (1938-59) and University Field (1892-1937), where Ortega Hall, the Humanities building and Woodward Hall presently stand.
