Trio 3 describes itself as "a group where music is the leader" and "organic improvisation is the governing principle." The collective ensemble comprises three internationally-recognized jazz masters- Oliver Lake, multi-reeds; Reggie Workman, bass; and Andrew Cyrille, drums. Composer, saxophonist, poet and Guggenheim Fellow, Oliver Lake, is one of the most prolific and eclectic jazz artists of the last 40 years. A founding member of the Black Artists Group (BAG) in St Louis, he is known for his solo music-theater work; his reggae-jazz group Jump Up; his work as a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet; his Oliver Lake Big Band; the Steel Quartet; and the Organ Quartet. Andrew Cyrille has performed with jazz artists ranging from Coleman Hawkins, Illinois Jacquet and Mary Lou Williams to Kenny Dorham, Muhal Richard Abrams, Horace Tapscott, John Carter, Mal Waldron and David Murray. In 1964, he formed an association with pianist Cecil Taylor that would last for 11 years. He has been awarded numerous grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and Meet the Composer as well as a Guggenheim Fellowship for composition. Reggie Workman has long been recognized as one of the most creative and technically adept of all contemporary jazz bassists. As a young man, he played with Gigi Gryce, Red Garland, and Roy Haynes, later joining the John Coltrane Quartet and participating in several landmark recordings. For 22 years he has been a Professor at New York's famed New School (Jazz and Contemporary Music Department) where, in 2007, he was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award.
